Caution Kills

Caution SignMy son recently got his driver’s license.  It’s been a painful process for both of us.  Isaac’s a cautious driver – which I love.  I, however, am the worst passenger this side of Tuscon.  So I pretty much have banned myself from riding with him…for his sake.  I knew if I continued with bulging eyes, fake brakes, and stifled screams – he’d never decide to drive on his own.

Isaac has been traversing our town on his permit and Mom’s tutelage for nearly two years – because my panic has thrown his caution into overdrive.

And I have learned a valuable life lesson.  Being too cautious can be just as dangerous and deadly as being reckless.

Isaac’s fear of driving has nearly paralyzed him in the decision-making process while behind the wheel.  Should he turn or go straight?  Should he merge or stay in his lane?  Should he brake now or later?  It’s created more than one opportunity for a wheel grab and a screeching stop in the middle of a grassy median or sandy shoulder.  It’s slow going without much progress or achievement

Reckless abandon can cripple your ministry.  But abject caution can prevent it from moving forward.  Find a soothing balance between taking calculated risks and grabbing hold of wisdom.

Find a competent driver and cool-headed rider to join you on the quest.

Rely on your previous driving success and learn from your accidents and near-misses.

Remember there’s no penalty for failing the test – take it as often as you need to.  (And, like Isaac, you might just pass on the very first attempt!)

Have a healthy respect for others along your road…sometimes your driving decision will affect their route.

And never forget – a caution sign merely implies paying extra attention.  So don’t stop or panic.  Slow down and be alert!
